Cancers of the Female Reproductive System

The region’s most advanced specialists are here for you

Gynecological CancersIf you have a gynecologic cancer, you want the care that will give you the best chance of recovery. Fortunately, you won’t have to leave home to get the care you deserve.

Lehigh Valley Hospital is committed to giving local women access to the same quality care that’s available at major national cancer centers. That means care by a fellowship-trained gynecologic oncologist -- a doctor who is both an obstetrician-gynecologist and an oncologist, with years of training in diagnosing and treating cancers of the reproductive system. There are only about 600 gynecologic oncologists in the whole country -- an average of a dozen per state. We have several of these specialists at the Cancer Center at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Our gynecologic oncologists can provide the most advanced care, including access to treatments that aren’t available everywhere. For example, we were one of the research sites for intraperitoneal chemotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer. This therapy is arduous, but it was shown to extend life an average of 18 months -- an astonishing advance in cancer treatment. And our patients were the first to benefit.

But don't take our word for it. Our patient satisfaction rating is in the top 1 percent nationwide.

Ask Our Expert
Q: I have very painful periods. Could it be more than menstrual cramps?
A: While pain during menstruation could indicate several conditions, the most common gynecologic cause is endometriosis. This condition occurs when functioning endometrial cells, normally found within the uterus, back up into the pelvis.
